USF presents “Aroused Traquility: Graphic Botanicals by Henry Evans”USF Thacher Gallery celebrates spring with botanical prints from a Bay Area master
What: USF’s Thacher Gallery hosts “Aroused Tranquility” featuring renowned printmaker Henry Evans
When: Sunday, March 18 to Sunday, April 22, 2012
Where: Thacher Art Gallery. Located inside Gleeson Library/ Geschke Center. 2130 Fulton St. (at Parker and Fulton) San Francisco, CA 94117.
Why: Henry Evans was a prolific illustrator and printmaker of California flora who producedmore than 1,400 linoleum block prints during his 31-year career. Perhaps best known for his iconic prints of the California poppy, Evans worked with living plants to illustrate their most essential characteristics, depicting them at their actual size and mixing his own inks to create the colors he saw in nature.
Admired by art lovers and naturalists alike, his use of line and bold color demonstrates the artist’s deep respect and understanding of natural forms, suggesting what the artist referred to as “aroused tranquility.” Although he was a self-taught artist, printmaker and botanist, he was a major figure in the Bay Area small press community. “Aroused Tranquility” will feature over four-dozen mono- and multi-color prints spanning Henry Evans’s career. The exhibition will also include original blocks and the artist’s tools.
Info: This exhibit is FREE and open to the public during library hours. The community is encouraged to attend. For details on the exhibition or more information on the Thacher Gallery please visit: www.usfca.edu/library/thacher/
