Janequin: La guerre
Jerusalem: Polychoral Mass in F (modern premiere)
Handel: Utrecht Jubilate and Zadok the Priest (with orchestra)
On Saturday, April 21, the University Chorus makes a provocative musical exploration of three very different types of invasions. The first is a militaristic invasion represented by Clément Janequin's *La guerre* (*The War*). *La Guerre* is one of Janequin's whimsical "programmatic *chansons*" which utilizes all manner of onomonopoeic words and syllables to imitate the sounds of war. The second is a religious invasion represented by Ignacio Jerusalem's Polychoral Mass in F. Ignacio Jerusalem was an Italian-born composer living and writing in "New Spain" (present day Mexico) and was part of a religious invasion that would have far reaching effects on two continents. This performance will be the modern premiere of the mass in its entirety. The final invasion is cultural. George Frederic Handel's appearance in London in 1712 sparked a musical revolution in England that embraced the Italian Baroque compositional technique and caused a demand for all things "Continental." The *Utrecht Jubilate* was the first piece by Handel written and performed in England and this native German-born's anthem *Zadok the Priest* has been sung at every English coronation since 1727.
