Historian/Musician Leo Sullivan reminisces:
". . . the Scandinavian Hotel
, a magnet for Norwegians, Danes, and Swedes of the valley. In
my eyes all the Scandias were real giants. The hotel, of course,
had the inevitable bar. The janitor intrigued me in the mornings,
cleaning and manicuring the spittoon on the sidewalk - not a
pretty sight at any time of the day. Once, no home was complete
without the customary spittoon."
Spitting is, sadly, out of vogue.
