After the creation and numerous performances of the duet triptych, WallBall, WallBall:Redux, and The Pretenders over the past 2 years in San Francisco venues such as CounterPULSE, the Garage, and The Lab, New York-based dance-maker Jesse Hewit returns next month with Total Facts Known, a full-evening work of dance theater based on Anne Carson’s stark and penetrating novella-in-verse, Autobiography of Red.

Total Facts Known is an inventory of knowledge and ability, presented paritally through the mythic but fervently contemporary story of a young, gifted and queer boy who is also a red-winged monster. As worlds slide in and out of focus, an ensemble of six recite lists of things they cannot do, give directives of things that they can, and manipulate objects and themselves, in order to convey acts of determination, to display real physical limits, and to give testimonies of the humble and tender condition of doing what we can with what we have. The protagonist’s mother balances a massive duct tape-bound heap of domestic objects in her arms, a lover “plays” vulnerability by singing an oddly effective love song to a crowd of strangers, and six strangers slide slowly across a white floor, their fluidity punctuated by violent silent screams. While coasting through narratives of systemic oppression, unrequited love, and the bleakness of destiny, the boiled down movement vocabulary and pedestrian text exercises of Total Facts Known occasionally reveal a bright and creeping peace and light earned by endurance, sweetness, and necessary self-interest. In this work, every body is a simple site of the political, full of strain, knowledge, experience, caution, and pulse.
