Top Stories: July 13, 2009by Staff on Jul 13, 2009Terminal B About to Take Off Mineta Airport’s Terminal B will open Wednesday, replacing five gates used by Southwest Airlines in Terminal A. Construction is still underway, however, and passengers will have to check in at Terminal A before proceeding to their gates—and checking their gates carefully too, because not all the numbers will have been switched by then. Construction is expected to last another few months, and both Delta and Alaska Airlines will not be moving into their new home until work is completed. Until then, Southwest passengers using Terminal B will lack some of the amenities found in Terminal A, though the airport reports that a few concession stands will be open by Wednesday. Local School Board Gets an F The Luther Burbank School District Board received a failing grade from the Santa Clara County Civil Grand Jury after a yearlong investigation of management improprieties. According to the report, the Board fired its superintendent and then quickly replaced him without a proper recruitment, and violated both open meeting and public notification laws. President Antonio Perez was also cited for possible conflict of interest violations in awarding school board contracts. The Board has yet to comment on the report, which is expected to be the subject of its next meeting on Tuesday. Read More at KLIV. Seven Arrests after Fatal Stabbing Seven young people, including two juveniles, were booked for murder on Sunday after a brawl left a local teen dead. Police say that the fight, which took place in the 900 block of Bluebell Way, may have been gang-related. Police responded to a call at 12:25 am Sunday morning, and five suspects were arrested ten minutes later, attempting to flee the crime scene. Another two suspects, including a woman, were arrested later. In related news, one person was killed and two were injured in Richmond after someone fired dozens of shots into a local garage. The shootings were part of an ongoing turf war, which has terrorized the city. To date, there have been 25 homicides in Richmond this year, quickly approaching the total of 27 homicides in the city last year. Read More at the Mercury News and KABC. The Baby and the Porn Prince An Amber Alert was issued Sunday night after James Mitchell, 27, allegedly beat a woman to death with a baseball bat in Novato and kidnapped her one-year-daughter. Police report that the child was found unharmed and that Mitchell was taken into custody. In a bizarre twist, Mitchell was later identified as the son of Jim Mitchell, a former San Francisco-based porn king, and owner of the Mitcheell Brothers theater—the “Carnegie Hall of Sex.” Jim Mitchell, who died in 2007, achieved notoriety for killing his brother and business partner Artie.
