Description

TOO MUCH RATHER
Collaborative works by
Monica Raden
Adair Stephens
Jake Ziemann

Channel-surfing and cultural cannibalism are among the methods employed by the collaborative artists Monica Raden, Adair Stephens, and Jake Ziemann. Together, the trio rides the waves of melodrama and reality and sci-fi freakshows as points of departure. They see monsters and shadows lurking in the nooks and crannies, haunting sparkly tidbits of teenage revelry. They take a moment to ingest it all, let it swirl around, and spew it out. The resulting conglomerate sculptures and paintings ask the question: Is it worth bringing it back from the depths of the peculiar— the nonsensical? But don’t think about it too long, for there is nothing there— or too much rather.

The three bay area artists are each currently completing their MFAs at California College of the Arts.

YOUR HERE IS NOW THERE
New Work by
Benjamin Vilmain

Vilmain has a deep interest in the psychophysical phenomenon of looking. The work he creates draws on experiences and fixations from his childhood. He possess a fascination with metaphysics, spirituality and the extramundane. He arranges and alters objects, created or found, in response to existing elements unique to the given architecture.

Vilmain was born and raised in Iowa. His work investigates the intersection between static and active observation through the use of optical triggers and other visually stimulating devices. Often, found objects, assemblages, paintings and sculptures combine to take the form of an installation that utilizes existing idiosyncrasies of a given exhibition space.

Vilmain currently lives in the bay area and is working towards an MFA from California College of the Arts.
