Description

Thomas Eggerer was born in Munich, Germany and studied painting at the Art Academy in Munich. As critic Morgan Falconer describes, “Eggerer fuses abstraction and figuration in paintings, drawings and collages which frequently feature strong architectural elements and groups of figures. These figures appear to happily inhabit very sunny, modern times; yet his broadly applied, often candied palette tends to wrench them from their moorings, leaving them floating, as if disembodies, across screens of colour.” In the mid-1990s, he collaborated with classmate Jochen Klein on a series of conceptually oriented projects dealing with questions of identity and public space. After moving to New York, Eggerer joined the artists’ collective Group Material.

One-person exhibitions of Eggerer’s work have been mounted at Galerie Daniel Buchholz, Cologne, Germany; Richard Telles, Los Angeles; Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, Hartford, Connecticut; the Kunstverein Braunschweig, Germany; Friedrich Petzel Gallery, New York; and at the Frans Hals Museum in the Netherlands. His work has been selected for numerous thematic exhibitions, including Compass in Hand: Selections from the Judith Rothschild Foundation Contemporary Drawing Collection at MoMA in New York; The Undiscovered Country at the UCLA Hammer Museum in Los Angeles; Baja to Vancouver The West Coast and Contemporary Art, which traveled from the Museum of Contemporary Art in San Diego to the Vancouver Art Gallery and to the CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts in San Francisco; Eggerer/Klein at Printed Matter in New York; and Oh Boy, It’s a Girl Feminismen in der Kunst and Die Utopie des Designs, both at the Kunstverein Munich. Eggerer’s work is featured in the catalogues Thomas Eggerer Atrium, published in 2003 by the Kunstverein Braunschweig, and O Pioneers, published by the Galerie Daniel Buchholz in 2007.
