Description

Bullseye Resource Center Bay Area Gallery is pleased to present This Fragile Skin, on view October 27, 2012 – January 12, 2013.

The human form is one of the most widely explored subjects in art. Despite this attention, the body continues to be fertile ground for thoughtful interpretation and exploration. Figuration seeks to make connections by fostering an empathic relationship between the maker, the viewer, and the subject. "This Fragile Skin" explores these connections in kilnformed glass.

The artists represented in "This Fragile Skin" only occasionally approach the figure directly. Instead, artists like Cassandra Straubing and Michael Rogers, with their works in cast glass, remind us of our fleeting existence through meditations on memory. Mel Douglas and Craig Leaper II’s sumptuous surfaces, like our own skin, are tactile, yet norms prevent us from touching. Kate Baker’s layered portraits merge candid images, digital information, and brilliant colors, commenting on the internal and external forces that create the world around us. Clifford Rainey destroys the classical torso and we are left with the beautiful, yet haunting, remains. A common thread binds the material, these works, and us. We are connected through our shared experiences of attraction and repulsion, lust and taboo, solidity and permeability, and, most of all, our shared fragility.
