Description

On March 16, 2013, global education non-profit World Savvy will host The World Savvy Challenge Bay Area Competition in partnership with San Francisco State University’s School of Education.

WHO: Hundreds of students from across the Bay Area are participating in the program, and nearly 200 of them will get to attend the event on March 16th to share their research and solutions with parents, volunteer judges, educational leaders, and community guests. All told we expect almost 400 people.

WHAT: The World Savvy Challenge is an academic program that engages middle and high school students in project based learning and solution seeking around a global theme. This year students will be exploring the theme of Sustainable Communities. Through the program, students work in teams to explore the theme, identify a topic and problem for further research, and develop potential solutions to their problem at the community, national and international level. Students then create a Knowledge-to-Action plan for how they can be involved in implementing their solution at one or more of these levels. Students will also engage in collaborative discussions with peers from other schools about existing strategies for addressing a problem related to the theme. Ultimately, the program empowers students to take informed action to address 21st century challenges locally and globally.

WHY: Many of today´s most pressing issues - protecting the environment, poverty, hunger, halting terrorism and responding to the worldwide economic crisis – are global in scope and can only be effectively addressed with international cooperation. The World Savvy Challenge helps students develop the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes necessary to effectively problem solve on a global level, and thrive as responsible global citizens.

WHERE: McKenna Theater – Opening and Closing Ceremonies, Creative Arts – Student Exhibits, Humanities – Student Presentations
