Description

The Pacific Mozart Ensemble presents "The Warmth of Holidays Around the Globe", with new and traditional music from Cuba, England, Russia, Brazil, Europe and the U.S. In keeping with PME’s commitment to local artists, the concert will include original works and arrangements of traditional pieces by Bay Area composers Sanford Dole and John Maas.

This program provides a sneak preview of PME’s upcoming initiative "To Cuba, With Love", which begins with a musical exchange visit to Cuba in June 2013 and culminates in a commission from internationally renowned choral composer Roberto Valera and folkloric Cuban dance and music master Manuel Suarez for PME’s first dance collaboration, with Suarez’s company Siete Potencias. The new work will have its premiere in the 2013-14 season.

Selections from the December program include:

Ave Maria / Gyorgy Orban (Hungary/Romania)
Ave Maris Stella / Edvard Grieg (Norway)
Bogoroditsye Dyevo / Sergei Rachmaninoff (from Vespers)
Glory Hallelujah to the Newborn King / arr. Mark Butler (American spiritual)
Kalinda/ Sydney Guillaume (Haiti)
O Magnum Mysterium / Tomas Luis de la Victoria (Spain)
Old Fox Wassail and The Holly and the Ivy / traditional English
Patapan and Un Flambeau, Jeanette, Isabelle/ traditional French
Peirot Chamishah Asar / Naomi Shemer (Israel)
Salmo 150 / Ernani Aguilar (Brazil)
Son de la Loma / arr. Jose Castillo (traditional Cuban folksong)

For over 30 years, the Grammy-nominated Pacific Mozart Ensemble (PME) has surprised and delighted audiences with concerts that cover the complete spectrum of classical and contemporary music. Since its founding in 1981, PME has demonstrated a commitment to musical innovation, whether in collaboration with living composers and other local and national musical organizations, or in exploring new approaches to choral repertoire from all eras. PME’s collaborators have included such artists and musical organizations as John Adams, Dave Brubeck, Meredith Monk, Bobby McFerrin, Kent Nagano, Sufjan Stevens, American Bach Soloists, The Berkeley Symphony, The Oakland East Bay Symphony, Sweet Honey in the Rock, The Women’s Philharmonic, and many others. The Ensemble is led by Music Director Dr. Lynne Morrow. PME was nominated for a “Best Choral Performance” Grammy® Award in 2006 for the Harmonia Mundi recording of Bernstein’s Mass with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester under the direction of Kent Nagano. In September 2012 PME released its second recording of Dave Brubeck's choral music, Brubeck and American Poets, released on the Dorian/Sono Luminus label.
