Description
The Supplicants—which features some of the Bay Area's most talented and innovative musicians—improvises everything they perform, which means that every concert is entirely unique! The ensemble does not have a designated leader; musical ideas develop collectively and are expressed through group interplay, so that each of the musicians contribute an idiosyncratic creative voice to the collective whole.Established in the spring of 1999, The Supplicants have developed an uncanny ability to anticipate where each of the other musicians’ ideas are headed and to provide either a supporting rhythmic groove, harmonic framework, or melodic idea that takes the music to new levels and dimensions. When drummer Sameer Gupta came across Franz Kafka’s short story “Conversation with The Supplicant” several years ago, he knew at once that the word captured the band's artistic intent: to serve themselves and the audience with boundary-defying, collectively created music.
