URBAN FARM KICKS OFF NEW YEAR WITH SEASONAL PLANT SALE

Sunday Sale of Season’s Garden Edibles to Benefit Hayes Valley Farm

On Sunday, January 22, in honor of its Two Year Anniversary, Hayes Valley Farm will launch its Seasonal Plant Sale, which will focus on edibles and beneficial plants. The sale will allow San Franciscans to get a head start on their news year’s resolutions to eat healthier and source their food locally, while contributing funds to support urban agriculture and education.

A diverse array of seedlings and other garden delights will be available at the Seasonal Plant Sale. For the adventurous gardener, Hayes Valley Farm will offer seed packets, seedbombs, and dwarf fruit trees. The Farm’s greenhouse crew is growing the top 10 edibles and 15 most productive fruit trees that thrive in San Francisco’s special coastal climate. All 25 varieties will be on on sale beginning at noon on January 22.

Seedlings will be primed to be put in the ground (or in pots, for some), and they will be ready to harvest and serve up on a plate or a bowl of soup within mere weeks. The sale will feature lettuce mixes, broccoli, herbs, ground covers, and over six varieties of greens, including Red Russian Kale and Bok Choy. With these hearty, nutrient-dense gems, it will be easy for locals to follow their mother’s advice to “eat your greens.”

The farm's main gates at 450 Laguna will open at 12 p.m. for gardeners to collect all the essentials. The Hayes Valley Farm crew will supply tips, tours, and tricks of the trade. Farm managers will be on hand to lend their expertise and guide guests in selecting plants that grow well together. Hayes Valley Farm houses one of two official seed libraries in San Francisco. Saving seeds is an exercise in optimism, reclaiming and preserving what nature has genetically perfected over thousands of years. Seed packets will include calendula, poppies, nettles, and clover.

Juicy fruit, incoming! Head’s up! The farm will also offer their incredible fruit trees from the Hayes Valley Farm’s Freeway Food Forest. Apples, apricots, figs, nectarines, pears, plums, pluots and even almonds will be awaiting good homes, and farm-hands will be delivering advice for anyone wanting a consultation on selection. These trees will not be found at any other San Francisco nurseries because they are both disease-resistant and have been manually dwarfed for easy-to-reach fruit. At only $100 each, its even possible to select multiple trees and start your own mini orchard. The fruit trees also make the perfect gift, for the urban farmer who enjoys tending to their backyard crops.

For city dwellers who don’t have backyards, seedballs are the ideal solution. “Seedbombs” contain everything the seeds need to grow: compost and clay. Toss the dried seedbombs into a crack in the sidewalk or the dirt around a street tree. When the rain comes, the seed balls will sprout, adding a dash of color to San Francisco’s concrete jungle. Hayes Valley Farmers will be selling several types of seedbombs. Rolled up inside the clay are companion planting guilds, such as calendula, radish, and red clover.

One of Hayes Valley Farm’s main goals is to show the potential for growing food on any urban site— even a former freeway. The seasonal plant sale helps further the farm’s goals by encouraging community members to start gardens in their backyards, balconies, windowsills, and vacant city lots.

The seasonal plant sale is Hayes Valley Farm’s first major fundraiser of the year. Locals will feel good knowing that 100% of the proceeds will benefit the Farm’s spring planting projects, operations, and educational programs.

Guests are invited to take a walk through the garden after they purchase their plants. Or, they can stay for the community volunteer day, which happens each and every Sunday from noon until 5:00pm. The sale ends at 5pm, but the public and fans of the farm can look forward to another plant sale in Spring.
