The Artists, Poets, and Impresarios of the Late 1940’s in Sausalito

When World War II ended in 1945, men and women who had fought to overcome tyranny abroad came home and sought to create lives with renewed purpose. The upheaval that changed the sleepy town of Sausalito to an industrial factory for the war effort was winding down. Aspiring artists, writers and musicians began returning home and enrolled in schools like the California School of Fine Arts (now the San Francisco Academy of Art) to study and enter their chosen vocations. Sausalito was primed to host this post-war "avant garde" and play a key role in influencing the San Francisco Renaissance. Sausalito was about to have its own artistic Renaissance. This collection from the Sausalito Historical Society displays Sausaltio's own Renaissance.
