Description
This stylish little rock and roll outfit hails from Los Angeles and is fronted by Weezer guitarist Brian Bell. Brian has taken a detour from his heavy rock and roll schedule to put together something he describes as "the album I've wanted to make my whole life." He is of course referring to their self-titled album, which is out now on Golden State Records. Pairing with up with longtime pal and veteran rocker Nate Shaw (Die Hunns, U.S. Bombs), they've completed a crafty collection that tugs on the ear while exploring the acute forces that push us all together...and tear us apart.Brian has enjoyed remarkable success as a musician yet has had his sinking suspicions that there are things lurking under the surface, things that must be grappled with in order to fulfill his odyssey. Something more than what is seen was bubbling to the surface and compelled him to reconnect with Nate and the early bonds that forged them into rock n roll "lifers". Recognizing Nate as the Tom Sawyer to his Huck Finn, Brian proposed an adventure. He explains: "Radical measures had to be taken to bring this darkness into light—make no mistake, an artist is at war. To engage, we had to harness the true American poetry of love and revolution: rock n roll. Armed with guitars, lines were drawn between our enemies and ourselves." And with that they charted their improbable course.
The sound they've created on their self-titled debut confidently employs familiar rock and roll conventions common to groups like the Beatles, Bad Finger, and Big Star. Alluding to various genres and attitudes of vintage rock and roll, they cleverly fold in slices of prog, country, and indie for a tasty contemporary sound that will find a home amongst fans of The Raconteurs, Rooney, and The Kooks. Rollicking and sweet, the album's power-pop soaked guitar tones, contagious melodies and get-along rhythms feel bright and lively, yet the lyrics are wistful and intimate, laced with a certain bittersweet longing and that accompanies the unknowable journey of human relationships. Brian points out "We came face to face with the cold blooded enemies springing from our own minds."
Mature in its songwriting and production, a sophisticated simplicity and youthful intensity shines through this collection and the work as a whole is a complete listening experience in the tradition of the great albums of rock and roll. Brian and Nate have been writing music together for several years now and fans of the duo have been highly anticipating this release. Several L.A. musicians contributed studio parts including Sean Lennon and many of the comments on the fan pages are along the lines of "Well worth the wait!"
Also catch them later that night at Cafe Du Nord!
