Description
Helmed by author and humorist Dan Kennedy, who also hosts the enormously popular Moth Podcast, the inaugural Moth StorySLAM will take place at Hayes Valley hotspot Rickshaw Stop, where it will continue to be held on the second Monday of each month. The Moth StorySLAM is open to anyone with a five-minute story to share on the night’s theme: Secrets (Think secret stairways, handshakes, agendas, or ingredients. Paper shredders, an undisclosed crush…anything on the down low). When the doors open, storyteller hopefuls put their names in a hat; a half hour later, ten names are picked and, one by one, the ten contestants take the stage to tell their five-minute story without notes. Their stories are scored by teams of judges selected from the audience, and after ten SLAMs, the winners of each SLAM face off in a GrandSLAM Championship. Stories told at StorySLAMs are also eligible to be featured in The Moth Podcast and on The Moth Radio Hour.
Dedicated to the art of storytelling, The Moth was founded in New York City 16 years ago. Since then, it has presented more than three thousand stories, told live and without notes by people from all walks of life to standing-room-only crowds worldwide. The Moth's StorySLAM series continues to expand throughout the United States, with sold-out monthly shows currently taking place in 13 cities across the country, from Boston and Ann Arbor to Los Angeles and the Twin Cities. The organization also presents The Moth Radio Hour, a Peabody Award-winning weekly series is carried by public radio stations nationwide.
"We’ve long dreamed of having a home in San Francisco as it is an inimitable city filled with fascinating people," said Joan Firestone, executive director of The Moth. "We are thrilled to join with KQED and KALW in giving the city’s raconteurs a chance to share their stories with both a local and worldwide audience.”
