Description
Hawaiian pronunciation can be baffling to mainlanders—it's exhausting sounding out all those vowels. And the Mahaka Sons have done nothing to improve the situation over the course of 35 years and more than 20 albums of Hawaiian music, with titles like Na Mele Henoheno Na Makahiki, helu 'elua. There are Midwesterners who picked up that record when it came out in 1999 and are still reading the front cover today. But do the Mahaka Sons care? Of course not! They get booked in Carnegie Hall, occasionally perform for the president, and then go home to frickin' paradise in O'ahu. And why? Because they're Hawaiian legends credited with helping to preserve some of the islands' most cherished musical traditions? Oh, right. - Steve Palopoli sanjose.comMore Info
