Description

"The Madness of the Elephant: A West African Dance, Music and Theater Performance Exploring the Reign of Guinea’s First President Sekou Touré" premieres at the Jewish Community Center in San Francisco on April 5 and 6. "The Madness of the Elephant" is an energetic and vibrant show about the reign of Guinea’s controversial first president, Sekou Touré, who was nicknamed "the Elephant." Touré led Guinea into independence, and, as a patron of the arts, was responsible for developing the popularity of the traditional styles of dance and music that you will see in the performance. As his reign drew on for 26 years, he eventually became paranoid and executed anyone he suspected of being opposed to his rule. Starring some of today's most celebrated artists from West Africa, the show is a co-presentation of the JCC’s "Arts and Ideas" series.
