Description
The original Tchaikovsky score is interpreted as never before with traditional cultural dance. The Jewish Nutcracker opens with Miriam at a Hanukkah party set in current day San Francisco. Miriam is then transported to the Second Temple in Jerusalem, where the Maccabean Revolt ends with victory for the Jews and rededication of the Temple. To illustrate Diaspora, the multi-genre choreography of Katy Alaniz Rous seamlessly blends dance forms such as Flamenco, Russian, Chinese, Persian, Kathak, Afro-Haitian and Capoeira. This production introduces a new holiday tradition, celebrates the diversity of Jewish culture, and re-tells the story of Hanukkah.
