A black comedy, The House of Blue Leaves manages to mix kitchen sink realism with music hall farce to shattering effect. It's 1965 and the pope is making his way to Yankee Stadium to say mass. Meanwhile in Queens, middle-aged zookeeper Artie dreams of making it big as a songwriter in Hollywood. Despite his girlfriend's encouragement, a number of obstacles stand between Artie and his California Dream, including his son's unexpected arrival, a trio of zealous nuns and his wife, the aptly named Bananas, a schizophrenic desperately trying to feel something real. Directed by Jeanie K. Smith, The House of Blue Leaves is a startling portrait of ordinary lives and extraordinary dreams in the 20th century.
