The fluidity of identity may be more prevalent now than ever before with the inception of social media, security infringements, identity theft and challenging cultural identities. In all of this malaise, what constitutes identity? Is it clearly defined or a less translucent quality? The Glass House will explore these questions in the form of photographic narratives, theories and concepts in order to gain an understanding into the degree in which we are identified. In an impeccably clean windowed house we wear our identities exposed to all. However, sometimes the glass is fogged creating a mask that confuses or clouds one’s perception of self or other’s. When the glass becomes opaque identity is abandoned or forcefully taken, harmfully damaging.
Living in a vast web of social interconnections, identity is no longer expressed in simple terms. By considering each photographic narrative we are asked to reflect on the complexity of identities and to challenge our ideals and perhaps reconcile to coexist with the diversities.
Photographers participating in the exhibit are Linda Barsotti, Gino DeGrandis, Barry Fleisher, Martha Ketterer, David Massolo, Mary Scarpetti and Tom Watson.
Avenue 25 Gallery is located on the 2nd floor at 32 West 25th Avenue, San Mateo and is a part of the San Mateo Library System. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 9 – 5.
