Description

The Emperor and the Nightingale:
Studies at the Intersection of Technology and Nature

New Work by Susan Sanford
November 7 ~ January 2

Artist's Statement:
Susan Sanford's new series combines assemblage and reworked photographs, most frequently embroidered, exploring the dialogue –and sometimes the conflict – between nature and technology. While machinery grinds up forests, the engines of nature are at work oxidizing that same machinery. Clocks tick , run down, rust and become homes to new life. Look closely at the forest floor and undiscovered worlds reveal themselves. It's a sort of rock, paper, scissors played out around us every day.

The Hans Christian Anderson story "The Emperor and the Nightingale" is a strangely prescient story about the limits of technology. In adopting this as the title of the series, Susan also noted how the story also touches on how we separate ourselves from experience in attempting to preserve it. She hopes these pieces are a way in to the viewer's own inner forests.
