The Cremaster Cycle

Description

The acclaimed five-part Cremaster Cycle is an evocation of the creative process by sculptor and performance artist Matthew Barney. While not created in chronological order, each one comprises a completely realized work in itself, and together they follow a geographical path from west to east and trace a metaphorical trail toward a fully developed form.

Barney’s Cremaster Cycle is not now, nor will it ever be, available to consumers on DVD. It last toured nationally in 2003.

Program A (1hr 59min)

CREMASTER 1- Taking the form of a musical revue choreographed by blimps and performed on blue astroturf in a football stadium, Cremaster 1 concerns itself with pure biological potential. 1995, 35mm, 40 min.

CREMASTER 2- A genuinely haunting gothic western, Cremaster 2 draws extensively from the biography of murderer Gary Gilmore (portrayed by Barney), as well as the life cycle of bees, Harry Houdini and Bob Dylan. 1999, 35mm, 79 min.

CREMASTER 3- Cremaster 3 is a towering and unparalleled epic. Celtic mythology, Masonic rituals, hardcore punk and the Chrysler Building converge for a work that functions as both a meticulously planned spectacle and utter fever dream. 2002,35mm, 182 min.

Program C (2hr 32min)

CREMASTER 4- Fairies, motorcycle races and a horned satyr are featured in the film that most clearly adheres to the biological structure of the series. 1994, 35mm, 42 min.

CREMASTER 5- Set in late nineteenth-century Budapest and starring Ursula Andress as the Queen of Chain, Cremaster 5 is a lyrical opera that trades distant biological motifs for immediate emotional resonance. 1997, 35mm, 55 min.

DE LAMA LÂMINA - This documentary follows Matthew Barney and legendary musician Arto Lindsay as they construct a float for Carnivale in Rio de Janerio. 2007, 35mm, 55 min.
