Description
Up in the Santa Cruz Mountains, they do things differently. Up there, you can play Neil Young's Harvest over and over for days, as loud as you want, and no one will say anything, if they even hear it. Brothers Jamie Coffis and Kellen Coffis came down from the mountain this year with their first album, The Coffis Brothers & The Mountain Men; they probably didn't even know about the current psych-rock revival that was waiting for them. Still, psychedelic isn't the best way to think about these young retro-rockers; there's throwbacks, yes, but their crisp bluesy songs recall everything from the Byrds to the Stones to Zep to, of course, Young. It's just in the air up there. - Steve Palopoli sanjose.com
