Description

“The Black Cedar Trio explores a path less trod,” writes the Berkeley Times. This unique ensemble is devoted to old and new chamber music for flute, cello, and guitar – from the Renaissance and Baroque to contemporary works written just for them by living composers, plus a few Appalachian folk tunes along the way. The San Francisco Examiner writes, "They bring a solid academic foundation to their performances...a delightful introduction to early repertoire, presented with historically-informed performances on modern instruments." Featured in live broadcasts on KALW 91.7FM and KKUP 91.5 FM, they have performed at Trinity Chamber Concerts and the Subterranean Arthouse in Berkeley, Noontime Concerts and Tangents Contemporary Guitar Series in San Francisco, Oakland’s Last Fridays @ Pro Arts, the Deep Valley Chamber Music Series in Ukiah, and the Davis Art Center. This year they will return to San Francisco’s Noontime Concerts and appear at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in San Bruno and at the Forte House.

Flutist Kris Palmer is a second prize winner in the National Flute Association's Young Artist Competition, a Carnegie Hall Recital Debut winner with Artists International, and a first prize winner in the Carmel Chamber Music Society Competition. Cellist Nancy Kim is a prolific chamber musician, with appearances in the Royal Opera House in Oman, Suntory Hall in Japan, Herbst Theater in San Francisco, Alice Tully Hall and Carnegie Hall in New York City, and Symphony Center in Chicago. Guitarist Steve Lin is a winner of the Boston GuitarFest Competition, winner of the East Carolina Guitar Competition, and finalist in the Taiwan International Guitar Competition.

The Black Cedar Trio will release its debut album next year with works never commercially released, and this concert with the Foothill Chamber Music Series features two of those works: Nathan Kolosko’s Hungarian Trio and Atanas Ourkouzounov’s Divertissement à Trois. The entire concert delivers music written as early as 1588 and as late as 2012 with Palmer on a variety of flutes – wood flute, alto flute, and Renaissance recorder.
