Description

For more than 30 years, downtown Mill Valley’s beloved, family-owned Mill Valley Market, has hosted one of the Bay Area’s most coveted food and wine events of the year. The 33rd annual Mill Valley Market Wine, Beer & Gourmet Food Tasting, is presented by Bank of the West with co-sponsors Pacific Union Real Estate, PG&E, Bradley Real Estate, and Marin Modern Real Estate. Supporting sponsors include Urban Sitter for the KidZone and Mill Valley Refuse. The event takes place Sunday, June 22nd from 1-4pm, on the Depot Plaza in downtown Mill Valley, and will feature award-winning wines, rare hard-to-find discoveries, refreshing hand-crafted specialty beers, samplings from the area’s best chefs and restaurants, and delicious gourmet treats, many of which are made by local producers.

The 2014 edition promises to be one of the best yet, with 10 restaurants, more than 60 wineries, 10 craft breweries, and more than 30 food producers participating.

Ticket prices are $50 Advance, $60 at the door. Tickets are currently available online at Brown Paper Tickets (service fees apply) and will be available for purchase at Mill Valley Market wine and spirits department, beginning the last week of May. http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/623359 Group Discounts available. For more information, visit http://www.millvalley.org/ or http://www.enjoymillvalley.com.

For the first time, the Wine & Gourmet event includes both Kiddo!, the non-profit Mill Valley Schools Community Foundation, as well as the Mill Valley Chamber of Commerce as its beneficiaries. Another first is the addition of complimentary valet bicycle parking, provided by the Marin County Bicycle Coalition and sponsored by Tam Bikes in Mill Valley. Attendees are encouraged to use alternative forms of transit to the event to alleviate parking problems. A new KidZone, sponsored by Urban Sitter, provides a fun environment featuring kids entertainment, arts and crafts and free childcare services for event attending parents. The KidZone is available for children ages 2 to 8 years old and space is limited. Note: Because of legal, health and safety reasons, attendees must be 21 to be admitted and bicycles, strollers or dogs cannot be allowed in the event.
More than 60 wineries will be featured at the event, including some exciting newcomers like Balo Vineyards from Philo, Deovlet Wines chardonnays and pinots, Hayfork Wine Co. cabernets, Hollys Hill Rhone varietals, Melka Wines cabernets, Picayune sauvignon blancs, Stolpman Vineyards red blends, Wrath Wines chardonnays and pinots and Orin Swift Cellars. Local vintners this year also deserve a look, including Angel Camp Vineyards from Mill Valley, Brooks Note Winery pinots also from Mill Valley, and Heidrun Meadery with sparking meads from Point Reyes Station.
Also featured are a number of small, artisan producers including Carica Wines syrahs, Cazadero chardonnays and cabs, Field Recordings with great reds, Odisea Wine Co which are longtime favorites, Trecini Winery who offer great values in sauvignon blanc and pinots, and V2 Wine Group pinot noirs. And not to be missed are some interesting imports – Austrian & German, Italian, and Uruguayan and Argentinian.

“There are so many fantastic wines that will be poured this year,” said Mill Valley Market co-owner Doug Canepa, who hand-selects the participants and whose father Jim founded the event in 1981. “A number of wines are worth the price of admission including Far Niente, Nikel & Nikel both known for their superior chardonnays, Silver Oak cabs which need no explanation, Twomey pinots and merlots, Frank Family chardonnays and Rombauer chardonnays – all of which are crowd favorites.”

The Mill Valley Market Wine, Beer & Gourmet Food Tasting added hand-crafted beers to their lineup a couple years ago and these refreshing brews became a big draw. This year 10 artisan breweries will be pouring, including 21st Amendment, 3rd Street Ales, Anderson Valley Brewing, Devoto Orchard Cider, Headlands Brewing Company, Lagunitas Brewing Company, Iron Springs, Moylan’s Brewing Company, Sierra Nevada Brewing Company and Trumer Brauerei.

Local restaurants participating this year include Balboa Café, Beerworks, Beth’s Community Kitchen, Bungalow 44, La Ginestra, Molina, O Baby Bar, Pasta Pomodoro, Piazza D’Angelo, Prabh Indian Kitchen, and Tony Tutto Pizza.

To top it all off, as guests meander through the incredible selection of wine and beer, they have the opportunity to sample some delicious products from local Bay Area food producers. The range will satisfy all palates and will include everything from hand-crafted cheeses to baked goods, pies, organic meats and of course gelato, coffee and teas. Some of the producers include Cici’s Italian Butterhorns, Rancho Llano Seco, Red Barn Walnuts, Equator Coffee & Tea, Orthodox Chews, Mamies Pies, Laura Chenel Chevre and Marin French Cheese Co., Spring Hill Cheese, Honeymoon Ice Cream, and many more.

Founded in 1981 by Jim Canepa, former owner of Mill Valley Market, as a “little wine and cheese gathering,” the Mill Valley Market Wine, Beer & Gourmet Food Tasting has evolved over time to become the preeminent event of its kind in the greater Bay Area. Noted for its crème de la crème selection of hard-to-find and sought after wines, as well as an amazing array of gourmet products and the hottest recipes from the culinary world, this is a connoisseur opportunity not to be missed!
