Description
Some time ago, I decided that the one time and place I would like to live is turn-of-the-century New Orleans. This might have something to do with my Disneyland obsession, and the romantic, rust-free depiction New Orleans Square offers. I'm sure there are a lot of obvious drawbacks to the era I am intentionally blocking out that historians and other interested parties can inform me of, but I don't want to hear them. I have no real basis for this decision, except that it seems like the coolest scene to have been a part of and I'm kind of bummed I missed it by about eighty years.I only bring this up because Grammy winner and frequent Spike Lee collabo Terence Blanchard is hard-wired to respond to tragedy with music. After Katrina ripped through his hometown of New Orleans, obliterating the house he grew up in, his first instinct was to compose. When he heard that Lee was producin a documentary about Katrina's aftermath, he got moving on A Tale of God's Will (A Requiem for Katrina), which Lee eventually used to score When The Levees Broke.
Blanchard and his Quintet will be peforming A Tale of God's Will as part of this year's Lively Arts program at Stanford. Blanchard's from-the-ashes composition reflect what New Orleans always has, and no matter what, always will be about.
There will also be a free meet and greet with Blanchard on March 5 in the Pigott Theater at noon.
