Description

The Museum of Pocket Art (MoPA) is proud to announce a mini- retrospective of its exhibitions, entitled Ten Wallets: The Museum of Pocket Art 2006 to 2009, to open in the front gallery of San Francisco's The Lab. It will be an unprecedented opportunity to view the Museum's recent shows in a collective context, as well as revisit older shows with new eyes.

MoPA, founded in 2004 and exhibiting extensively in San Francisco since 2006, is a mobile, surreptitious exhibition strategy that hosts shows featuring new and emerging artists in an immediate, intimate, and innovative way. Housed in wallets that travel nationally and internationally through the aid of "guest pockets", the exhibitions usually take part at the openings of other, more geographically fixed galleries, during which the "guest pockets"; approach gallery-goers and invite them to visit the museum. This engages a spatial, temporal, material, and dimensional dialogue between viewer and artwork. Currently, the museum holds four exhibitions annually, alternating between curated and juried group shows and solo showcases of individual artists. MoPA also maintains an extensive web-based archive of past shows and catalogs.

Ten Wallets: The Museum of Pocket Art 2006 to 2009 represents the last ten of the Museum's shows. Wallets will be displayed in the gallery space, and additionally three wallets will be circulated for viewing at the opening, including Titanic Piano, MoPA's most recent offering curated by Laura Boles Faw and Nancy de Y. Elkus. In total, this retrospective will feature over forty artists responding to the Museum's curatorial and exhibiting conditions in a broad and inspired range of media.
