Description

The Foothill College Science Learning Institute presents its first science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) guest lecture Thursday, Sept. 19, at 7 p.m. at the outdoor plaza of Foothill’s new Physical Sciences & Engineering Center (PSEC). Tickets will be available for purchase in August.

TED Talk presenter and noted bioengineering research scientist Jonathan Trent, Ph.D., will speak about his research with algae to produce energy. Not only does he grow algae for biofuel, he wants to do so by cleansing wastewater and trapping carbon dioxide in the process—and it’s all solar-powered.

In addition to the illustrated talk given by Dr. Trent, the evening will feature live music. The event is ideal for inquisitive, attentive students, age 16 and older, and interested community members. NOTE: The event is not appropriate for young children.

Foothill’s PSEC is dedicated to strengthening student mastery of STEM topics through interdisciplinary teaching and applied learning. The PSEC is also home to the Foothill College Science Learning Institute (SLI), an innovative instructional model that draws on educational research and best practices to support successful teaching and learning of STEM-related content.
