Description
Tauk's invigorating debut album makes a compelling case for solar energy. Recorded at Jack Johnson's solar powered Plastic Plant Recording Studio, the hybrid's blend of jazz, rock and funk is not short on energy. Loaded with slick guitar noodling its way through the surging psychedelic jazzy organ, funk-laced bass lines, and reggae rhythms, Tauk is a jam band that knows how to leave just enough of the expansive instrumental fills to make you want to see them live without drowning the album. The thick blend of dripping bass and flowing riffs give a sturdy backdrop for the understated dub chirps on album standout "Eva", but their ability to weave soul into the tracks is what makes them stick in your head.Genre-bending "Eye To Eye" balances the splintering guitar in the verses against a soul-stirring hook reminiscent of The Doobie Brothers, even pulling both away for a swirling organ solo at one point. The chugging, wavy riffs and uplifting sing-a-long hook of "Roll With The Punches" is the kind of feel-good rock that is a too rare. The first verse of "Turn Me In" has a soft jazz vibe fuelled by mellow guitar casually flickering through, before the rest of the band jumps in to jolt it to a midtempo gem. With the various directions they take their sound, it is impressive that things only get tangled up a bit on the muddled "Maybe So". The closing song's overbearing cluster of instruments seem to fight each other for the spotlight, where songs like the bongo beating "Nail It Shut" have a much cleaner sound, with no less intensity, that serves the band better.
