Leadership Excellence’s mission is to educate African American Youth for personal and social change.

THEORY OF CHANGE:
Our theory for change is simple. When young people are given the opportunity to imagine new possibilities, build vibrant community by sharing their stories, and given techniques to deal with stressful life challenges, they become more effective at creating positive personal and community change. This means providing youth with opportunities to heal from painful experiences, and foster hopefulness and general well-being. We call this process radical healing, which is a process which builds the capacity for individuals, organizations and communities to thrive.

PROGRAMS:
Oakland Freedom School (OFS) is a five-week summer literacy program that uses African American literature and culture to engage children ages 5 to 14 and their families in developing positive self and community identity.

Camp Akili is five-day summer residential camp that takes place in a tranquil retreat environment. Camp Akili offers interactive exercises that teach participants about the root causes of social inequality, cultivating their abilities to identify and solve problems in their communities.

Camp Alkebulan cultivates self-awareness, global awareness, and leadership skills by taking youth on a three-week excursion to West Africa to reconnect with their cultural roots.
