Description

Tanya Aguiniga is a furniture designer and maker raised in Tijuana, Mexico, and now based in Los Angeles. Her work is informed by border experiences: the interconnectedness of societies, the beauty in struggle, and the celebration of culture. As a 10-year member of Border Art Workshop / Taler de Arte Fronterizo (BAW/TAF), Aguiniga helped build and run a community center that is literally made out of trash in an impoverished area of Tijuana. At the San Diego Museum of Art and the museum of the Rhode Island School of Design, she participated in educational outreach programs aimed at diversifying audiences. She has also done a great deal of work for migrant rights through art installations across Mexico and the United States.

In her studio work, she explores the "unseen" aspects of ordinary objects, for instance creating half-chairs that rely on the wall to function and whose images are only complete as projected shadows. Aguiniga holds a BA in furniture design from San Diego State University and an MFA in furniture design from the Rhode Island School of Design.

Her lecture will be titled "Creating a Craft Identity."
