Description

The gallery's summer show brings together the relationship between the written word and its visual counterpart in a lighthearted yet poignant manner, much like one's own summer reading.

Jeffrey Browning's photorealist depiction, "Courting Danger", of tennis ace Alice Marble, is also the title of the former Wimbledon champion's autobiography. Critically acclaimed writers Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Clifford Odets, and Barry Gifford express themselves visually in another outlet for their creative genius. Ferlinghetti brings James Joyce back to life, Gifford shares his memory of 50's icons Kid Gavelin and Thelonius Monk, and playwrite Odets, incorporates whimsical vignettes to his watercolors, alongside John Register's serigraph "Hollywood" also signed by poet Charles Bukowski, with an image that is the cover of his book of the same name.,

Social Realist's Raphael Soyer and Ben Shahn, and photographer Richard Nagler use the Hebrew alphabet in their artworks, with Shahn utilizing calligraphy to show a quote from Leviticus, Soyer depicting a family memory whereby his mother reads from a Yiddish newspaper, and Nagler focusing his lens on Isaac Bashevis Singer's typewriter that he used to write his novels and stories for the Forward.

Images of yachts, sailboats on the Bay,the Canterbury Tales, a Russian Hill Cafe, baseball, and relaxing picnics, round out the exhibition, a pleasant alternative to a complex and often turbulent world.
