Description
Street art and muraling are on the same continuum. Where’s the line? Is there one? Which artists have been blurring it and how?The mural culture that has taken root in the US came from Mexico. What was going on in Mexico that made it unfold that way? How did mural culture come to SF?
The 1934 Coit Tower murals are an early piece of the story. Here in the Mission District, we see more evolution: how the Mexican movement led to Socialist Realism then the Chicano mural movement became the Mission school. These transformations spawned a whole culture of street artists.
We’ll focus this walk more on the political and social questions than on art techniques, but you’ll get to see some of SF’s most amazing murals and hear insider stories about their creation, along with participating in the usual Thinkwalks exploratory discussions.
Rain doesn’t necessarily cancel. Check here to see exact weather by the minute as it approaches!
Feel free to call if you have questions!
