Description
We can all relate to the truths about family relationships distilled by Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda (whose previous films include After Life and Nobody Knows) in this beautiful work reminiscent of the classics of Yasujiro Ozu. It is summer, and siblings Ryota and Chinami gather with their individual families at the home of their elderly parents for a memorial for their brother who died in an accident 15 years before. When a family gets together, the gamut of emotions raised in 24 hours can be amazing... but you knew that already. The Yokoyama clan is no more dysfunctional than most, but Kore-eda keeps the drama at eye-level, often focusing on the rituals of preparing and consuming meals and always painting the characters' various tensions and regrets with subtlety and grace.
