“Stem Cells: Their Promise and Potential,” a presentation by Dr. Bertram Lubin, president and chief executive officer of Oakland’s Children’s Hospital and Research Center, is set for 6:30-8 p.m., Thur., Mar. 15, at Berkeley City College’s auditorium, 2050 Center St., between Shattuck Ave. & Milvia St. The event is free and open to the public.

Dr. Lubin is the first pediatrician to serve as the hospital’s president and CEO. As a researcher and physician, he was part of a team which demonstrated that cord blood transplantation could cure children with sickle cell anemia. He also helped to establish the world’s only non-profit Sibling Donor Cord Blood program. Dr. Lubin has authored more than 200 research papers and has won many awards, including the Bronze Bambino for lifetime service to Children’s Hospital and the Philip S. Hench Distinguished Alumnus Award.

The event is sponsored by BCC’s Department of Science and the college’s Science Club. It is part of a five-part Spring Science Seminar Series.
