The South Bay's multicultural character is observable in many ways. Look around and see the signs in various languages; follow your nose to the nearest taqueria or pho shop. And if you prick up your ears, you're just as likely to hear mariachi as you are to hear the pulsing sound of taiko drumming--a modern, more coordinated take on the ancient art of thrashing a big-ass drum. One of the first college taiko groups, Stanford Taiko is known around the world for their mastery of percussion. Their polyrhythmic performances move from the delicate pitter-patter of thin sticks and finger cymbals to the massive, thundering o-daiko drum.
