Description

The Stanford Jazz Workshop’s formative years were blessed by the participation of Stan Getz, an undisputed giant of the tenor saxophone. In addition to his role at the Workshop, where he was an integral member of the faculty from 1982-1990, Getz also was Stanford University’s Artist-in-Residence from 1985-1988. Getz freely shared his knowledge and wisdom with the Workshop’s community and inspired them with his artistry. A true master of melody, he always played straight from the heart with feeling and spontaneity. Bassist Larry Grenadier provides the direct connection to Stan@Stanford: he was a Stanford student during Getz’s Stanford years, and the two musicians got to know each other well and interact both on and off the bandstand. A star-studded lineup of Jazz Workshop faculty including guitarist Peter Bernstein, drummer Gregory Hutchinson, and many special guests will pay homage to Getz’s enduring legacy of creativity, individualism, and heartfelt communication.
