Description
Giacomo Balla's Disintegration x Speed (1913) could have easily served as inspiration for the Cantor exhibit Speed and Power. The painting expresses both the physical and psychological disintegration of an accident and its aftermath--one that involves an inhuman sense of velocity. Airplanes, trains, automobiles: each new technological advance in locomotion propels us forward, faster and faster through the 20th and 21st centuries. Speed and Power offers an artistic examination of our mechanized lives as it relates to the evolution of transportation in our highly trafficked urban centers. How we live now looks a lot like Giacomo Balla predicted it would a century ago. (JE)
