Sons of the Buccaneers was born circa 1994 of members of Skip Henderson's famous 'Starboard Watch' after Skip cast off to sail down to Panama and through the Canal.
The Sons of the Buccaneers have appeared at Quinn's Lighthouse on the Oakland Riviera (Alameda Estuary) for years and have been popular at many Bay Area yacht clubs and nautical events. Alan Lochhead is an animated virtuoso concertina artist whose 'how to play' book is distributed by Mey Bay Music. Alan is also a classical stand-up bassist and sings harmonies. Jim Nelson is a well travelled folkie who sings clear strong vocal leads and picks a long necked 5 string banjo. (He's been known to yodel, too.) Ruup, a genuine Dubliner, brings tears with his soft haunting Irish pennywhistle melodies and lilting solos. Brian Theriot is an award winning fiddling fool whose nimble licks and bright fills kick the music up just another spicey notch. Mordecai contributes lead vocals and harmonies while his 12 string guitar rings out the group's driving rythyms. Their music is exciting and infectious, and you'll want to be singing along, so grab a Buccaneers' Hymnal© at this rare Peninsula event and join the fun singing Sailors' Ditties, Shipboard Chanties, Bawdy Ballads, Raucus Rhymes and the occassional Shaggy Dog Story. Rated PG.
