When the influential alt-country outfit Uncle Tupelo disbanded, both lead songwriters—Jeff Tweedy and Jay Farrar—had equal odds of reaping the benefits of the alternative rock boom. In the years since, Farrar has enjoyed moderate success with Son Volt, while Tweedy formed a little band you may have heard of called Wilco. For a few years, in the late ’90s and early ’00s, Farrar seemed visibly shaken by the acrimonious split, releasing increasingly distracted records to diminishing returns. But after a half-decade in the wilderness, Farrar re-formed Son Volt in 2004, and since then has seemed sharper and more focused than ever. The three studio records Son Volt has released since then constitute his strongest body of work since the Uncle Tupelo days, full of confident sentiment and warm, lived-in melodies. - Paul M.
