Description
Come join us for a day of practical magic in the kitchen turning lye and vegetable oils into luscious and healthy soap scented with essential oils. We'll also show you how to make a simple salve from your hand and simple beeswax candles. Either make a perfect homemade holiday gift and you'll know what ingredients go into your soap and what you're burning when you use candles (not so for store bought non-consumables)!Activities:
11am-fire up oven, morning refreshments courtesy of Arizmendi Bakery, and general farm work
12pm - Learn the basics of soap making and watch as we demonstrate making a 7 bar batch of olive and coconut soap scented with essential oils and made with a bicycle powered blender. We'll go over safety, ingredient selection, health benefits and sourcing, natural additives, and scenting with essential oils. We'll also show you how to use beeswax as a base for a simple salve.
1pm - Break for wood fired pizza in our earth oven (bring toppings to share!), and other nutritious, delicious food
2pm - Candle making - as simple as melting beeswax and pouring it into a form. We'll make candles together, show you how, and where to get local beeswax.
3-5pm - More discussions and demonstrations on soap and candle making, and general farm work.
Late Afternoon-more work and hangin out, conversatin, eatin and bein merry!
As always, the ovens will be blazing and we'll provide the dough so bring some
pizza toppings, or some other local, seasonal fare to share and compare at our
ultra-local potluck.
Also check out the farm and see appropriate technology demos like solar ovens and
dehydrators (if it's sunny), rocket stove, compost toilet, pedal power, earthen
structures and of course the cob oven!
Bring your own utensils if you got em, and musical instruments, parlor tricks and
special talents are always welcome too!
