Description

Energized by its triumphant 2013 productions of Osvaldo Golijov’s Ainadamar and Leonard Bernstein’s Trouble in Tahiti, San Franciso’s contemporary opera company begins its 2014 season with a unique double bill, bringing two landmark works firmly into the 21st century. Join Opera Parallèle on an unforgettable journey, as a theater troupe travelling through the desert sings the jazz-infused Mahagonny Songspiel by Kurt Weill. They are searching for paradise—and that now-rarest of commodities, water—in a shattered world. Along the way, they discover not paradise, but an audience for their performance of Poulenc’s outrageously surreal satire Les mamelles de Tirésias. Conceived and directed by Brian Staufenbiel, Opera Parallèle’s production seamlessly melds the two works into one extraordinary operatic experience, under the brilliant musical leadership of Nicole Paiement.
