Description
Michael Fassbender plays a cigarillo-chomping, ass-kicking outlaw in this psychedelic Western about a young Scot aristocrat searching for his forbidden love in the rugged, early West. Fassbender does his best Han Solo as he guides the bewildered boy through dangerous thickets for the duplicitous purpose of cashing in the bounty on the family of his idealistic companion's lady. The film takes its time, but director John Maclean packs enough bizarre humor, sudden violence, and eye-popping imagery to keep things interesting. Slow West dances on the line of post-modernism, both honoring and tongue-in-cheeking the stock characters it employs. Shot in New Zealand, the film is dreamy tribute to a classic genre.
