With the tagline "The Greatest Break-Up Story Ever Told," independent animator Nina Paley's heartfelt yet fanciful feature adapts the Indian epic Ramayana, juxtaposing it with her personal experience with a relationship gone bad, starting in San Francisco, then India and Brooklyn. Sita is a beautiful Indian goddess who, in this film, might remind you a bit of Betty Boop, since she sings several 1920s jazz vocals by Annette Hanshaw. And Sita's husband Rama is a handsome prince, but in Paley's view, he does her wrong. Narrated by three hilarious shadow puppets, this comedy of heartbreak manages to be irreverent while remaining entirely respectful of its source."
