Description

In the early 1900s, a musical style known as son was born in the Sierra Maestra mountains of Cuba. Combining Spanish guitar music with African rhythms, the lively cross-cultural style became an immediate hit. But by the 1940s, the son boom was largely over, having been replaced by jazz, salsa and big band music. In the 1970s, Sierra Maestra was created as a son revival project. It was the first band to play in the old style and has since become one of Cuba's most beloved bands, its members having played in world-renowned groups including the Afro-Cuban All Stars, Cubanismo and the Buena Vista Social Club.
