Though not as well known in the States, Sham 69 made a name for themselves in their native UK. The group helped pioneer a subgenre of punk, known as "Oi!"--a response to the perceived co-opting of punk music and culture by bourgeois college youth with no appreciation for the struggles of the working class. Sham 69 play were influenced by their contemporaries in the straightforward punk scene, but also took queues from the popular pub rock, glam rock, and '60s mod rock. In other words, they were really, really British. The riffs are meatier than those coming from groups like the Clash and Sex Pistols, and the tunes feature anthemic, chant-along anthems rallying cries, such as, "If the kids are united/we'll never be divided.")
