Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States and has been an African American tradition since the late 1800s. Since the passing of civil rights legislation in the 1960s, Juneteenth has enjoyed a strong resurgence.
The mission of The San Francisco Juneteenth Committee Inc. is to continue the historical tradition of our ancestors by celebrating this holiday through education, recreational and entertainment events targeting both the African American community and the general public focusing on youth and families in the San Francisco Bay Area, and the greater Northern California regions. The San Francisco Juneteenth celebration is a multi-cultural event drawing attendees not only from local African-Americans, but all San Francisco citizens and ethnic groups. In addition, San Francisco city tour bus operators make stops at the festival bringing national and international attendees.
Festival brochures are placed at the San Francisco Visitors Center. The San Francisco Juneteenth Committee maintains an office at the African American Art and Culture complex @ 762 Fulton Street that serves as administrative space and distributes SF Juneteenth year-round events information.
