Description
Montalvo Arts Center presents Natural and Creative Capital, a new multidisciplinary thematic arts program that explores issues of sustainability in our natural and creative environments, with the re-launch of Sculpture on the Grounds, a free exhibition of 12 new works that have been installed on the Great Lawn of the historic Villa and in various locations on the grounds. The sculptures are by David Middlebrook, Ann Weber, and Ali Naschke-Messing.Natural and Creative Capital is an 18-month program featuring visual and performing arts coupled with public and literary arts programs that invite audiences of all ages to take the time to contemplate a sustainable future. Visual artworks will examine renewed thinking by artists about the use of cast-off materials, and include works that reflect the many wonders of the natural world, the possibilities of a sustainable future, and that capture the challenges facing our planet. The performing arts will challenge and ignite passion for change, featuring new works of dance and music that both inspire and engage. Education and public programs will encourage exploration and engagement with the environment --particularly the 175 acres that constitute Montalvo's extraordinary grounds, the Lucas Artists Residency Program, and the rustic hiking trails. Kelly Sicat, director of programs and organizer of the programmatic series, said, "The challenge today is to create environments that provide the space and time to inspire, re-calibrate and engage in the world differently."
Sculpture on the Grounds was established in 2002 as a means to incorporate the visual arts with the surrounding environment and to capture and engage visitors with the beauty of the historic property. Middlebrook's work will remain on view through September 30 and Weber's work will remain on view through October 31. Naschke-Messing's site-specific installation, From Within, So Without, will remain on view through June 2011. Nasckhe-Messing also has an site-specific installation, Open, on view in the Project Space Gallery through August 25.
