Description
Are you an avid reader? Ever read a script? Enjoy chatting about what you read? Come experience a new kind of book club at San Jose Rep, where books or scripts have been chosen to match the 2012-2013 season of plays. The first gathering is at San Jose Rep on August 28 at 7:00 pm (doors open at 6:45) and no prior reading is needed. To launch the San Jose Rep Script/Book Club there will be a very special speaker: playwright and professor Matthew Spangler. He will share how writers turn books into scripts and alert you to things to look or listen for in San Jose Rep’s first play of the season, The Death of the Novel, running August 30- Sept. 23.
Dr. Spangler turned the best-selling book, The Kite Runner into the world premiere play at San Jose Rep in 2009.The Kite Runner, which received the San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Critics’ Circle Awards for Best Script and Best Overall Production, has since been produced by many theatres across the United States and Canada. His new play, The Tortilla Curtain, based on the book by T.C. Boyle, received an Edgerton Foundation New American Play Award and was produced by the San Diego Repertory Theatre in March 2012. Dr. Spangler teaches courses in performance studies and writing for the stage at San Jose State University. He has written stage plays based on works by John Cheever, Ernest Hemingway, James Joyce, and many other authors. To learn more about Dr. Spangler’s work, see: http://www.matthewspangler.org
The club will meet in the lobby of San Jose Rep at 7:00 pm on the Tuesday preceding the run of each show. There is no charge to attend and no requirement to purchase tickets: everyone is welcome.
Bookmarks describing the San Jose Rep Script/Book Club choices and dates will be available on Aug. 28 as well as the script for the next play.
