Modernbook Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition by San Francisco photographer Fred Lyon in conjunction with the new publication, San Francisco Then, by Modernbook Editions. This is the inaugural exhibition for Modernbook’s new location at 49 Geary Street in San Francisco.San Francisco Then is a visual journey through the streets of San Francisco in the 1940’s and 1950’s as seen through the lens of San Francisco native Fred Lyon. It is an investigation of the iconic urban landscape and the people who inhabit it, as former Mayor of San Francisco Willie Brown writes in the introduction to the new publication, “that’s what this book is all about---real people, doing real things set against a background of picture postcard San Francisco.” Lyon’s photographs display San Francisco at its best, capturing the film noir drama of the setting while also celebrating the everyday efforts of those who kept the city humming with life.
